Again,I say please define "lots of cash".
More than I can afford to spend.
One problem I found with this
list here, are the blind generalizations that are tossed around,by
people who don't seem to give the impression that they know what they
are talking about.
And perhaps all I can talk about is my own experience.
Not everyone who loves vinyl owns a five figure turntable, and a seven
figure system.
I would wager, many are like me,and own systems that cost under
$5000.00 to put together.
My system is probably right around that mark, purchased and upgraded
piece by piece over twenty or so years. My current turntable is a
Sota Comet, which cost me around $600 when I bought it 15 or so years
ago; I also have an older Denon direct drive which isn't currently in
use. I've been using some of the relatively inexpensive Grado
cartridges, although I used the somewhat more expensive Sumiko Blue
Point when I first bought the table. My CD player, purchased perhaps
7-8 years ago, is a Marantz CD63SE, which also cost me about $600.
Before that, I used various and sundry CD players, including an Adcom
and an NAD. When I first bought the turntable, I spent a little time
(not weeks, but hours) comparing analog and digital, using the best
source material available for each. And when the LP source was
optimal (essentially new, European Decca vinyl, for example), the
sound was superior to CD - but not by a huge amount. And most of the
time, my LP source material is far, far from optimal. And this was
before I bought the CD63SE.
I'm upgrading to a Marantz SA8001 in the next couple of weeks, so it
might be a good time to re-do that comparison. I still have plenty of
vinyl.
No you are not going to get a system for
under five hundred,or two hundred bucks at Best Buy,like you can for
CDs,but there seems to be something that a lot of the anti-vinyl/anti-
audiophile snobs don't seem to get.Which is,ever since the
introduction of solid state technology,in the early 60s,the sound of
mass-market audio equipment, has gone steadily downhill.
I wouldn't know - I haven't bought my equipment from Best Buy or its
equivalents in many years. I dislike paying for advertising.
You get what
you pay for,or put some effort into to get it cheaper.Vinyl, and tubes
are not for the lazy.
Actually, "you get what you pay for" isn't entirely correct. I think
that at virtually any reasonable price point, one can find components,
or assemble a system, that sounds good, or buy or assemble something
that sounds like ***.
Do you own an expensive home theatre,
No. I'm strictly two channel.
or big screen TV ?
Yeah, I won a 50" TV in a raffle 6-7 years ago. The kids play
GameCube stuff on it.
Tubes amplification,is in my book,as or more important than vinyl. Is
there anyone here willing to argue that?
Since I don't own any tubed equipment, I wouldn't dream of it.
And if you cannot tell the difference between tubes, and solid
state, perhaps you have no business listening to classical music in the
first place.
Looks like snobbery isn't exactly limited to the anti-vinyl crowd, eh?
Also, the Martzy will continue to appreciate in price,as will the mint
minus original pressing of the first Os Mutantes I have my eye on,for
$145.00.
I can't say that about most CDs,but I can say that about reel
tapes,another "obsolete" format.
With all due respect, you can't say that about the vast majority of
LP's, either. Yes, some violin records seem to be appreciating, but
the majority of LP's are virtually worthless monetarily. And there
are certainly some vocal records that are gaining value - but it
generally has nothing to do with sonics.
