Interesting speculation here by an English econ professor:

But BIS, others, seem to already have her approach with their full-
length single track mp3 libraries, at modest cost, if one is truly
interested in sampling first but intends to buy if likes the sample.

Advantage Robert.

Dear Rugby,

the English Professor could have a point, if, but only if, those
others, having heard the buzz about a product, were to go and buy it.
However, if there is no downside, such as the risk for punishment or
being found out, why would the "others", who were inspired, go and buy
the product, if they easily and without risk can download it for free
and in sufficient quality?

This is the question that I cannot answer myself.
If I hear:

Look, I just downloaded the marvellous Kalevi Aho Double Bassoon
Concerto from xxxxxxx. Just absolutely fantastic!! You really should
listen to it.

OK, I'm with you that far, but why would I go to the shop rather than
visit xxxxxxx to get "my free copy"?

Then, as an ex-lawyer and a proprietor of intellectual goods, I have a
problem with people taking the law in their own hands, and even more
with people that use the law as a shield to cover up their illegal
activities.

In the end it boils down to this:

Does the general public want to have innovators, artists, composers,
movie directors, in short, does the Public want to enjoy the creations
of such people? If not, fine, get on with what you're doing. If yes,
then the Public must make sure that the creators get paid, and this
cannot be on a voluntary basis. There is no difference to this and
wanting to have a car. You want it, you pay it.

Best - Robert
