Also, some recent vinyl pickings from my local Half Price Books &
Records:
Respighi - The Roman Cycles. Ozawa-BSO (1978, DG) Wow! This is quite
spectacular, both sound and performance. Makes me want to seek it out
on CD.
This is a great sounding LP and marvelous interpretations as well.
When I compared the LP directly to the CD (one of the very few times
I've ever bothered to do so) the LP had much more lively and life-like
fluctuations of dynamics plus fuller low and high ends. Clearly,
either the record player was far better than the CD player or the CD
issue from DG left something to be desired. Something to remember if
you are thinking about getting the CD.
Chopin complete Polonaises - Malcuzynski. First time I've encountered
this artist. Quite good. I need more of him in my collection.
You do! Especially more Chopin.
Martinu Symphonies. From a four record Supraphon set (recordings
1976-79) featuring C. Neumann and his Czech band. I found these
performances thoroughly entertaining but I haven't any other Martinu
Symphony recordings to compare.
V. Neumann, I presume. I like his Martinu series too. No reason to
fear comparisons.
Beethoven Eroica. From an old (but well preserved) Columbia Entre mono
LP with Leinsdorf leading the Rochester Orchestra. This was strictly
impressive. Performance, sound, playing -all first rate and better
than Leinsdorf's more labored BSO reading.
I bought this a while ago and still haven't heard it--maybe I'll pull
it out. I only bought it to hear the oboe solos, but I suspected
Leinsdorf would be of interest as well.
Walton, Belshazzar's Feast (Previn, London, EMI). I haven't listened
to this yet. I think I bought it strictly for the funky, belly dancer
cover art.
Yes...that was quite a cover.
Wagner Overtures - Silvio Varviso leading the Dresden State Orchestra
in a 1970's (I think) Philips Festivo disc. I love this guy's Wagner
(this and the live Meistersinger from Bayreuth). No nonsense, direct,
extroverted conducting.
Thanks for the recommendation. For some reason I hadn't gotten this
disc yet, but I always have wondered about it. My local brick n mortar
had a copy of it this week, actually.
And an off-topic disc: Bill Cosby: "When I was a Kid." Cosby was an
excellent stand-up in his younger days.
Agreed.
