At least one president was caught with his mistress in a closet while
he was in office. And since in the U.S., saying "I'm sorry" seems to
make up for any injury one has done (as has been shown by the careers of
everyone from Jimmy Swaggart to Nixon's henchmen), I could easily believe
that in a decade, Spitzer's currently peccadilloes will have been forgiven.
Given the attention span of the average American, "forgotten" is at least
as likely.
I can't think of any examples of people caught in these situations
who have come back to run for higher office successfully. In fact,
Ted Kennedy is the only one that comes to mind who even tried.
I'd agree it's conceivable, but the odds of a successful presidential
run are so remote to begin with, I think he's as good as done.
You're warm. Stay in Massachusetts. Congressman Gary Studds was
caught in flagrante delicto with an underage male congressional page.
He was re-elected by a landslide. And the more famous and recent one,
Barney Frank, whose lover ran a male prostitution ring out of Frank's
Washington apartment. Frank is probably more popular today than then.
Same response as to Richard--I guess I didn't emphasize "higher"
enough. Some of them can keep their existing positions, but it
seems their prospects for moving up to a higher position are more or
less gone. It's conceivable that Frank could win an election for
senator or governor in Massachusetts, but I think these guys all
realize that they are asking for this stuff to come out again
and be rehashed if they try.
