Of course. My comment was meant partly as a joke (and apparently not
a funny one!) but also partly to express incredulity at the idea that
Beethoven would be best played without any sense of tradition. I
think that's what has bothered me about the Pletnev LvB that I have
heard: too often it sounds to me as if he was simply trying to do
something different by applying tempo changes almost at random ("eh,
why not slow down right about... here!"), without the sense that I get
from, say, Mengelberg, that the differences are actually based on a
cohesive style of interpretation.
Well said. That has been precisely what I have objected to regarding
many of Pletnev's interpretations. This kind of playing may generate
excitement, a feeling of a new take on things, but I wonder if it
holds up with time.
