can any one tell me if this is correct Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Mravinsky /
ORCHESTRA : Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Berliner Philharmoniker) / year 1953
Exceedingly unlikely.
Which of the "big name" conductors, starting with Toscanini and
Furtwangler, didn't take this work into their repertoire, either on
disc or in the concert hall?
Neither Toscanini nor Furtwangler recorded it and I have not heard
of broadcast recordings of it by them. I haven't looked up
Furtwangler's repertoire and don't know whether he conducted it, but
Toscanini only ever conducted the last two two movements and that was
in Italy, probably in the 1890s. I have read quoted comments by him
that despite his love for Berlioz's music he didn't care for the work.
But I have also read that Toscanini was considering conducting it in
his final NBC SO season (1953-54) until he cut way back.
