In a couple of months van Zweden's live Beethoven 5 and 7, recorded at
Dallas Symphony concerts last November, will be available on CD
through the Dallas Symphony store and website. Performances were fast,
intense, and rapturously received.

The set on Philips, cond. Jaap van Zweden, has a lot of fine playing
and some very exciting performances. (The 7th just whizzes by in the
AT manner...) The CD's are for both SACD and regular CD players, but
the five-CD set is very expensive. (Philips 476 028-2) When I got the
set, I had to import it, as it was not to be found in American
outlets (on the web, of course!). I bought it from amazon.de. The
sound is very fine. I have not explored all the contents, but I have
heard nos. 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8. Van Zweden is the Music Director
Designate of the Dallas SO. I heard two Beethoven symphonies cond. by
van Zweden this season with that orchestra, nos. 8 and 7. His recorded
"Pastoral" brought to my mind recollections of the old Weingartner
recording.
The printed matter in this set leaves a great deal to be desired:
Almost every page consists of montage, often with text in white ink
over pale or gray backgrounds or even dim photographs. Even the labels
look this way, and all of this is quite difficult to read. --E.A.C.

Has anyone here heard and formed an opinion of some of the recent Beethoven
symphony sets being offered? I'm thinking of the Marriner set actually, but
the Gergiev set also qualifies. I already own the Karajan ('63), Zinman,
Barenboim, Bernstein (DG and most of Sony) and Harnoncourt. I'd feel like a
dope getting another just to play once in a while. But the reviewer in
Fanfare gave the Marriner a rave. Does it go to the top of anyone's pile
around here?

Mackerras's new set goes near the top of the pile for me. Right now
I'm wondering about van Zweden. The recent live Haitink performances
have been excellent and his LSO cycle might be worth a look as well.
Developing cycles by Paavo Jarvi and Osmo Vanska should also be on
your list. All of these (and Dausgaard, too) are excellent modern
cycles with varying degrees of infusion from the latest fads in
Beethoven interpretation.
You've gotten plenty of comments already, of course, but IMHO you can
also look backwards, not just forwards, if you've only got five or six
sets on hand and at least one of them (Zinman) is rather up to date,
edition-wise and superb.
What about Schuricht, Scherchen, or Mengelberg--fabulous, amazing
experiences? One of the Jochum sets? A Toscanini set? Szell? Walter?
Konwitschny? It seems like it's time to catch up with the past, not
just keep up with the current crop. I have trouble believing you
considered and rejected all of these to select the ones you have now.
