For some reason Dutoit gets no love, and this is the one I would
recommend. In terms of sound, there is no other that comes close. This
is the only one I come back to (although there really is room for even
better).
I have the Ozawa (DG) and I really don't find it all that impressive,
so I am surprised how many people are recommending it. It's ok. I'll
give it another listen just to be fair (when I can).
I can't remember what I disliked about the Sawallisch. I discounted
the Dorati for sound. And while I have not heard the Rozhdestvensky, I
have his sleeping Beauty and find the sound disappointing (too harsh
and not lush enough). If it is similar, I would probably not recommend
that either.
I agree...I've had them all at one time or another.
Another thing is the inclusion of music often left out of most recordings.
There were some pieces written later (I believe)...the "Russian Dance" and a
few others that are not always incorporated into a *complete* recording.
Another thing is the shuffling of music from Act One being used as the Pas
de Deux music in Act Three.
The absolute *best* DVD performance is the Swedish Royal Ballet
performance...exquisite dancing, music, costumes and sets! Taken at a pace
that seems to me to be how a performance would progress before movies and TV
sped up our attention span.
The Anthony Dowell production for the Royal Ballet (with Dowell in the
Carabosse role) on DVD is stunning!
