When they wander around an art museum, do they speed up when they get to
the stuff painted by dead people because it "belongs to another age"? The
way you describe them, young people are only interested in stuff that's
part of their world, defined as stuff that's happened during their lives.
To the extent that's true (is it really?), perhaps *that's* the problem.
It's a major part of the problem. Kids aren't interested in anything they
don't already know.
The reason for experiencing anything new is precisely because it _doesn't_
connect with our previous experience.
I'm curious to know if interest in jazz has declined as much as interest in
classical music.
I'm afraid it has.
