That's correct. You could indeed only load into iTunes the music you want to
have on the iPod, and change that as you desired. The big fly in this
ointment is that every time you try to load tracks into iTunes it tries
to download album art ... and files, since I have changed the info
in the MP3s and it never recognizes them, and also it tries to determine,
in some way that does not work, "gapless play" info. This takes time
to complete, and canceling it is a pain.

Album art - turn it off in the prefs. And it won't replace aret you have.

Gapless playback - not an issue. It's very quick.

What I do do is keep Playlists of groups of pieces in iTunes. When
I decide to change the music on the iPod, I go into iTunes,
the iPod area, select all the tracks on the iPod, and delete them
from the iPod. Then I select the playlists I want on the iPod,
drag them to the iPod icon, and let it copy them over. This
works fine ... but if you want to just change one playlist
out of many, you still have to delete all from the iPod and
recopy everything back. This is what I call stupid.

Huh? Why delete everything? I really don't get what you're whining about....

Also, another stupid, simply connecting the iPod to a computer
resets the shuffle settings. I like to play through the whole
set of music on my iPod with shuffle album on, so every album
(which I have set up to be either single pieces or a thing
like "Debussy Piano Recital #1") plays exactly once, in random order.
This stupidity means I can't recharge the iPod using a standard
USB cable and a computer. I either need a dedicated charger, or
a special cable that does not connect the inner two connections
on the computer end but rather has four resistors that apply the
proper voltage to the iPod that tells it "I'm connected to a
charger, not a computer".

Huh? Resets shuffle settings? I've never seen this. Which iPod model do you have?

Can't charge from a computer? That's a new one two...
