These are MP3's, and they're not cheap. No effin' way am I paying
that kind of money to download this ***.

I understand the sentiment, and my (non-)buying behavior reflects
total agreement. Yet...I have to admit that mp3s at a decent bitrate
sound just fine to my ears for my current lifestyle--on the go, in
hotels with a laptop, in the car, walking the dog, while doing dishes,
while moving about the house, while drifting off to sleep.... Direct
comparison with the real thing reveals differences, but...what can I
say?...it just doesn't matter to me most of the time. I listen to mp3s
a lot and get lots of pleasure from the music.
But yeah, I don't like paying a lot for inferior stuff. And I don't.
Apparently, however, there's an entire of generation of penny-
pinching, quality-compromising listeners who actually view convenience
and portability to be greater virtues. Those are the people who will
make this site a success if they find the prices reasonable. My guess
is that they will not partake of DG's bounty until the prices are much
lower.

Jeff,

So you are able to tell the difference between DG's 320k MP3s and the
original CDs?

Steve

I haven't listened to any of DG's mp3s...have you? I suspect I would
not notice a difference in sound in even the best system/environment I
have available to me. Given the experience I've had with 128 and 192k
I feel safe enough above 192 not to worry about sound quality. The
compromise in quality at that point seems more about booklets and
packaging and pushing the responsibility of backup media/processing
onto the consumer--a slightly more complicated task than putting discs
on shelves.

What did you find when you compared 320k mp3s to CDs?

You can download one track for free, so I downloaded the 4th movement of the Mahler 9th with Abbado and the BPO, as I have that physical CD too and have it as Apple Lossless on my computer. I'll do various comparisons over the next few days, as time allows. My computer connects to my stereo via S/PDIF so its pretty clean. Will try speaker & headphone tests. I broke my high-end Sennheiser headphones and the best I have now are Sony MDR-7506. And small B&W bookshelf speakers with a JBL sub-woofer. Certainly not high-end audiophile.
