The best way for me was to download to an external drive. If I change
computers, it comes with me and is easier to deal with. I can download
to an ipod or other portable device as desired. If you choose this
route, you then have more decisions: small portable drive or large
high capacity drive. If you have a laptop, mobility may be important
(and the max size is 160 GB or so, costing about $120-140, some more).
If you don't care about mobility, you can get one with 1+ terrabytes
if you want (will be slightly to $100+ more than the mobile device,
but will have much higher capacity). The mobile devices ARE mobile and
not heavy. You will then need to decide how to rip them and what
programs to use, but that is partly a function of the earlier issues.
But if something ever happens to the copy, you can always re-rip the
music from the CD. You could also get several large ipods or devices
that plug in as well. I think this will be more expensive, but it may
work for some people.
Hope that helps.
So you download to a hard drive and when you listen at home, how do you have
it set up? Do you have the computer hooked up to a home stereo? I don't want
to do that. I'd have the hard drive just for back up but for listening,
what? A portable i-Pod that I hook into my stereo? And so the entire music
collection is stored on both the hard drive (for back-up) and on the i-Pod
(for listening)?
