What are your favourite individual recordings of Prokofievs symphonies
1-7? I have Gergiev's set which I am not so satisfied about. I have
just got Mravinsky's 6th, and I will order Ancerl's 1st and
Kondrashin's account of the 3rd.
If the sound is any good on the Mravinsky 6, consider yourself
blessed; he pretty much owned the piece (and it's my favorite
Prokofiev symphony). Kuchar on Naxos is worth hearing if sound is a
consideration, though it is awfully reverberant.
I have the live Kondrashin 3 on Philips, which is a real winner.
Oddly, I've never heard Muti's recording, though I recently saw him do
a sensational rendition in Chicago.
Any other really good readings? What about Karajan's 5th?
One of my faves, really potent. Ormandy/Sony is also fine.
My favorite "Classical" is Bernstein, fast, furious and fun. I'm
really not a big fan of the others, but I can vouch for Kuchar in the
revised (Op. 112) 4th.
