More and more people are using external USB cards, especially if you work
on laptops. Be careful. They may have compatability issues with some
computers. A friend has a very impressive Toshiba LT, but the USB cards do
not 'play well' with that particular computer. My guess is that similar
issues may pop up with USB turntables.
I haven't had any trouble at all with my Edirol UA-1A USB Audio Interface.
One of the rabbis at work was given a USB turntable by his daughter, and even
with his dicey laptop I was able to get him up and running. After I gave him
a quick tutorial, he was able to transfer a family-heirloom LP of Israeli pop
music, convert it to an MP3 (no tracking, but that's another set of lessons),
and email it to her via YouSendIt.com. I felt pretty good about that.
