LP transfers- what hardware do you use?

I recently explained to a quizzical friend my method for transferring
LP's, which involves a stand-alone D->A converter that connects to my
computer by. I could connect the sound directly to the PC's audio
jack, but the converter does a far better job and eliminates a lot of
signal contamination/electrical hum (as a PC, it is nothing special).
I find that this converter, which I found quite affordable five or six
years ago when I bought it, is no longer made. Nor are there any on
EBay.
So what do you use to produce a quality transfer? Do you have a good
sound card that solves this? Or turntables with USB?
Please let me know so I can assist my friend in creating his own
system. Thanks.
