Re: Hatto Chopin-Godowsky confirmed by waveforms

In this case, "knowing" means the kind of corroboration that Farhan
has been putting together. The ear (anybody's ear) is not realiable
enough. There was fairly widespread probabilistic doubt, i.e., a
feeling that Hatto was a miracle (probability zero), but proof is a
different matter. You can't prove that something is a fake unless you
find the original, which is not so easy, and then compare by ear to
see if it's plausible, and then compare the waveforms.

So there was probabilistic doubt, accompanied by a certain perplexity
on hearing the stuff... but that's not the same as knowing. And
probabilistic doubt didn't necessarily lead to or even suggest the
kind of operation WB-C and Hatto were really carrying on. I do believe
that if somebody had guessed the kind of operation, the hoax would
have been uncovered much more quickly.

Or maybe iTunes did reveal the hoax early on, but I don't want to
speculate on that. iTunes became helpful in an awful hurry, that's for
sure.
