Hello
Being not very knowledgeable as concerns mp3 encoding, I would be very
grateful for any advice. I'm planning to convert (if that's the right
word) some of my Cds into mp3s, and have done so already for some CDs.
I use the Windows Media Player. In the case of mono CDs, I use a
bitrate of 192 kbits at least for mono Cds and a bitrate of 256 or 320
kbits for all other CDs.
Is the Windows Media Player a good choice for this? Is it correct that
for mono CDs, a bitrate of 192kbits is always sufficient? I have
difficulties distinguishing the mp3s I have produced so far from the
original CD, but this might also be due to the fact that I don't have
a very good player at the moment.
Many Thanks
Verena
Hi Verena,
At the bit rate 192 kbps all files sound very well, MP3, M4A, WMA, or
any other format. There is no big difference what encoder do you use.
I personally prefer M4A, it allows lower bit rates like 128 kbps
without practical quality loss. The original sound of the recording
makes the biggest difference.
Still I suggest that for your best and best sounding CDs you use
Monkey's Audio, a lossless format that compresses the files by about
50%. You prepare tagged APE files (tagging is very important!) and
then you can easily convert them into any other format by dbpoweramp,
retaining the tags. In fact, encoding into Monley's Audio can be done
by dbpoweramp, too.
Best,
Dmitry
