That sounds normal to me. I don't recall ever using a slide rule.
And I studied math long before calculators were standard and
certainly before they were allowed to be used in exams.
I was one of the first people at school to have a scientific calculator
(1972), and there was no objection to our using them -- the teachers were
more interested in whether we'd set up the problem correctly than whether
we'd gotten the right answer.
