Sorry for the open-ended question. I'm buying some recordings
based on my reading of Copland's "What to Listen To in Music" and
happened upon a recording of 2 Palestrina masses (Missa Papae Marcelli
and Missa Aeterna Christi Munera--Oxford Camerata w/ Jeremy
Summerly--Naxos). I was knocked out. On first hearing, almost
supernaturally beautiful.
What else should I be listening to as far as early polyphony (or
plain chant for that matter)--I don't expect comprehensive
recommendations, just a few good points (composers, recordings) to dig
in.
something that really knocked me out recently was the Hilliard
Ensemble's Perotin disc.
One of my favourites! The first early music CD of theirs I bought was
music of Palestrina and Victoria.
Wandering a bit off-topic for this thread, their recordings of Arvo Part
are also worth a listen.
