l find myself listening more and more to music from my computer and
have subsequently started backing up my classical (99% piano)
collection to the computer @ 192 kbps.

I have a brand new computer which has an on-board sound card (which
from what I gather are all "fairly" good these days) coupled to
logitech X-230 speakers (which have rave reviews for the price). All
in all it produces a fairly good sound for my music.

I am wondering though whether it is worth investing a few extra £$ and
getting a specialist sound card, and whether i am likely to see much
of an improvement for the amount i would be likely to spend (£30-40)
($60-80).

Any advice would be gratefully received.

A few months ago I would have enthusiastically recommended the M-Audio "Audiophile" card. Evidently they are not going to provide drivers for Windows Vista, so never mind.

I used to use a lot of M-Audio products in my WIndows days. It is disappointing to hear they are not supporting Vista.

Even if the OP is not running Vista today he might upgrade in the future.

A good reason to upgrade is to get digital outputs (S/PDIF or coax) if your system doesn't already have that, and provided you have some way to connect that to the other end (speakers / amp / receiver)
