to be typed in news:1183298168.303072.68150@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:
No First Prize in piano awarded at the just-concluded Tchaikovsky,
even to a Russian. Da!
The End is near ?
Perhaps someone here attended or heard the broadcasts ( which I was
not able to make work.)
It happens every now and then. Back in 1974, there was no gold awarded in
the violin competition. The silver was shared among three players: Eugene
Fodor, Ruben Agaranyan and Rusudan Gvasaliya. Fodor's publicists thereupon
came up with clever phrases which told the truth, but not the whole truth,
in a manner I consider deceptive and misleading.
For example, Mr. Fodor's Wikipedia page, as it stands this morning, reads:
"He achieved the highest prize awarded in the International Tchaikovsky
Competition in 1974 in Moscow, Russia. This award raised his profile
further, especially considering that he was an American winning the top
Soviet prize during the height of the Cold War."
Yes, and I was a sideman for Nelson Riddle. The full truth is that I
played percussion in a community orchestra when I was a teenager, and there
was one occasion on which Mr. Riddle conducted that orchestra and I
happened to play a few passages on bongos (with sticks).
Anyway, back to the "no gold" situation: It happens, and of course it's
disappointing that there's no first prize laureate, but then if the jury
thinks for whatever reason that nobody deserves that top award, what are
you going to do?
This is one of the reasons why things like that British opera competition
show creep me out; what if there are, frankly, no singers who are worthy?
There are enough phony-baloney ersatz fake "opera singers" in the world,
who have skipped the boring task of learning their craft and getting years
of experience before earning their star status, and who have taken the
shortcut of promotion in the manner of pop musicians. Goodness knows the
UK has supplied more than their share of these crap performers already, and
I say it's time we plug up the hole in the sewer and not let any more out.
