Re: I hate online shopping

I hate to harp on the subject, but what happens when you
order a book online and it shows up damaged?

You contact the seller and arrange for a replacement.

My, how convenient and time-saving!

Yes, but how often does it occur?

Out of the hundreds and hundreds of books I've purchased over the years,
both through book clubs and online stores, I think only two ever had to be
returned because they were damaged. Weighed against the inconvenience of
shopping at a b&m -- and (generally) paying more, that's nothing.

As for CDs, in my case:

MDT: A flaw in one of the CDs of the slimline double of RVW conducted by
Boult and Barbirolli. Exchanged by vendor.

MDT: One of those notorious "Russian Revelation" CDs had some other work in
place of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto #2. I took too long before I heard
the disc, and the label went out of business (surprise!) in the meantime, so
MDT could not help me.

amazon.fr: Ordered Berlioz choral music cond. Plasson, package arrived open
and empty. Very apologetic reply from vendor, and replacement sent rapidly;
but I wound up getting replacement after US issue date, which is what I was
trying to get around in the first place.

Some idiot on eBay: EMI 7-CD Lipatti box had gouged, dented and torn outer
box. Drawn-out and irritating process to get refund from vendor -- who then
complained that I had returned it with the outer box damaged!

Some goniff on eBay: Sold me 1949 Met "Salome," which turned out not to be
the Myto release, but a CDR copy of same ... with two-second gaps between the
tracks. Vendor let me take credit against another item, but I've never
bought from him since.

Those are all I can think of right now; I'm sure more will come to mind.

Addition: Now that I see a post about Cristina Ortiz' recording of the five
Villa-Lobos piano concerti, I must note having bought a set of these from an
acquaintance I otherwise respect highly, but who must be a steady smoker,
because the box, booklet, and foam rubber inserts REEKED of the stench. I
replaced the plastic parts, threw the foam into the trash (probably a good
idea in any case), and aired the booklet outside before filing the set.
