What they've done from a technological sound point is impressive. I
have my CD copy of the '55 recording in my CD player and the SACD in
my SACD player, and when I toggle back and forth, everything sounds
the same except the tape hiss (that is, there is no tape hiss on the
SACD). The Binaural stereo version for headphones is also impressive.
I'd like to seem more people experiment with it.
That being said, I find the recording quite disturbing. It is
literally soulless. There's no one at the other end. I have this image
in my head of a piano just playing itself which I cannot get by. Since
I'm always conscious of this, I get a cold feeling when listening to
the music. The great thing about chamber recordings is that it sounds
like the musicians are in your listening room, and the occasional hum,
breath or bow striking a stand reminds you that even though you cannot
see the musicians, they are there. Not so with this.
Also, the sound quality of the mono recording is pretty good,
especially considering how bad some piano recordings from the era are.
If there is going to be a follow up to this release, then they should
at least tackle a recording where the quality is truly awful, like
something from the 20s or 30s.
So bottom line, the disc is certainly an interesting curiosity, but
not worth buying.
What interests me more would be a blind auditioning test, not just
against GG's mono recording, but others' rendition as well. Soulless
or not, it should be judgment by listening without knowing who's
playing it. That's just my standard. :-)
