I should now like to have a very high spec PC with an enormous hard
drive and masses of RAM that could, (in theory), store my entire
collection but also allow me to arrange quick accessibility to my
collection for immediate playback. I would also need to retain some
capacity for ordinary business and office needs. I must add, I don't
envisage editing or composing music, I only want my PC, when needed, to
access my audio system to manage and store music etc.
1. You may need to define in computer terms
(megabytes or gigabytes) the storage space you
require. This requires beforehand deciding in
what file format you want to store music (e.g.
MP3 format, about 1 Mb per minute, or WAV
format which is tenfold larger.)
2. For speedy retrieval, you will probably find
hard drive storage adequate (and CD storage
too slow.) You can "arrange quick access" by
simply writing ASCII batch files that start
music data files in turn (e.g. M3U format for
MP3 or WAV files.) Hard drives are amazingly
cheap nowadays.
3. The audio quality of your audio card is important,
so you need to understand its technology (sampling
rate etc.) You will probably hear the quality offered by a
separately powered preamp. Your main hardware
problem may be the low quality of powered speakers
designed for PCs (rather than home hi-fi amps.)
4. Bus and RAM speed may be important.
5. CPU and OS speed seem relatively unimportant.
6. Any PC that can play music satisfactorily will be
capable of other ordinary tasks, e.g. writing, household
records, taxes etc.
Why not post your specifications here to invite comment?
