While I know what a CD-R is, I don't have a very good feeling for how
they behave with respect to ordinary CDs. I'd guess the initial audio
performance can be as good, but are they more likely to deteriorate
due to handling or environmental conditions? For examle, is there some
maximum temperature range one needs to observe when storing them?
Do they have a significantly shorter lifetime? (Obviously I'm a
complete novice on the subject!) Thanks.

CD-R longevity is a mystery to me. Since the time I started making them in
1998, I have tried to determine what makes some of them fail. I have used a
variety of brands (TDK, Maxell, Memorex, Verbatim, PNY, Pengo, unbranded,
and others), some with paper labels and most without, and I have kept a
large miscellaneous sample of them in my car, ungaraged, summer and winter,
some in albums, some in visor pockets (none in CD boxes) since that time.
They're all still playable without problems.

I have had a CD-R that someone else made for me go bad in less than 2
years. And one that I bought went bad after about 4 years. Both were stored
in proper CD boxes in the house. I've had far more factory-made normal CDs
go bad on me.

The only thing I can think of that I might be doing right is that I always
burn mine at 12x or 16x. I have recently done a few at higher speeds; time
will tell if that makes a difference.

My advice is, don't worry about it. If you are worried about it, make a
backup copy. I'm darn glad I made a backup copy of that one CD-R I bought
that became unplayable (since I knew one of the performers), but usually I
don't make backups.
