And, of course, others do handle the immediate emergency, but every
OB/GYN goes to his patient as soon as they are checked into the

doctors covering, but then *those* doctors are on call. Having the
excuse that you were at a concert would not be a reasonable one in
the eyes of the expectant mother.
There is a world of difference between "not be a reasonable excuse in
the eyes of the expectant mother." and "a matter of life and death".
Besides the expectant mother, there are hundreds or thousands in the
hall, who saved money, travelled a long way, to attend a performance.
Childbirth is still a "matter of life and death." We have vastly
improved the odds, but it remains a very dangerous procedure, and women
still die in childbirth.
For me there is a difference between a GP in a rather isolated small town,
who may be really needed, but not very often, in such cases, and an
OB/GYN, who has many patients expecting children simultaniously, and
should have and can have propper replacement. The problem with cell phones
is that too many people think they need one and it is a matter of life and
death that they have it switched on all the time.
It's only when it really is a matter of life and death that they should
have it switched on at all times. And a physician may never know just
what calls are a matter of life and death. For this, I have no
recriminations.
