Hi Dmitry,
A nice idea to create an artist specific radio station.
I cant see the actual bitrate for this Flash audio stream, but especially
in the applause, it is clear that there are sound quality problems. Why
don't you use a simple MP3 playlist (.m3u file) that would give you almost
the same functionality in any player?
Both for consumers and for servers bandwidth is not a real problem
anymore. A 160 kbit stream is not even a problem. Compatibility might give
problems. e.g. The satellite set top boxes I use (Dream Multimedia) can
play shoutcast MP3 streams and MP3 playlists without problems, but have
problems with proprietary formats like Flash.

Dear Chel,
I use MP3 75 kbps average bit rate (ABR) for Elena's streaming
station. Of course, it would be no problem to increase the quality
from the present "radio" quality to the CD quality. However, I do not
see a reason to do it. The "radio" quality is an established standard
for most free radio stations. My understanding is that CD-quality
streaming should be a paid service. I might have to consider this in
the future, if I see enough interest. For the time being, those who
wish to listen to Elena's CDs in a better quality than MP3 75 kbps ABR
can buy downloads in a superior quality in three different formats in
Elena's downloads shop for a low price. Nobody is going to get poor
because of this.
Are you saying that you cannot listen to a flash-based streaming with
your set top box? One cannot install Adobe Flash plugin there? If so,
that's a pity. But I hope this problem will be solved with time.
I used m3u streaming many years ago but this technology seems to be
inappropriate because it is so easy to download the files, and the
next move will be sharing them via FileFactory, MegaUpload, and other
file hosters. This is especially unproductive for the artists if the
files are full quality. In addition, with Flash you can brand the
player with your own design skin, while m3u files call some (or non)
default application that depends on the user computer configuration
and in many cases it does not work.
Yes, streaming as a technology making the accent on the artist is
exactly what artists need, this is my new theory. There are myriads of
anonymous downloaders on Elena's site (>18000 pageloads in March) and
I am sure they are just looking for particular "songs" by Beethoven
and Mozart and they do not care for the performer at all. Sitting at
the computer and listening to streaming requires another grade of
motivation, these visitors should be fans of the particular artist.
Warm regards,
Dmitry
