Barber's Violin Concerto. I seem to remember reading that the person
who commissioned the work complained that the first two movements weren't
virtuosic enough, so Barber responded with the published finale. For me
at least, it doesn't fit with the character of the first two movements at
all.
But at least it made for a wry story for inclusion in program notes (at least
until a certain unspecified jackass sued over it).
