Things seem to have calmed down a little so I will make an attempt.
The Original Poster may be near to the heart of it about the Leningrad
Symphony by saying it was a precise straight reading which he may come
back to. Wonderful playing, or so I think, in the (mostly) chamber
playing of Movement II. Mostly section writing but superb
orchestration for the participants.
OP here.
Firstly thank you very much for this education.
Secondly: My "first impressions" were written after I had sampled my
way through those five CDs and after I had listened to all the
versions of the first movement. Now I have done the second movement
leaving out the Teldec CD altogether. After having delivered the least
'colourful' (English is not my first language...) version of the five
Slovák surprises me with the most 'youthful' and springy second
movement. Järvi is doing the opposite but that is another story.
I find I sort of recognise Kurt Sanderling's manners from the 15th
symphony in Slovák's way of doing the 7th. I think they were working
in Leningrad at roughly the same time - or is my memory playing tricks
on me?

Uh?
It is entirely possible I could be completely wrong):) the owner of
Naxos thinks I am!
But I don't and thought the Yablonsky pretty much routine which, for
all his faults and for good or bad,the hapless Mr Slovak pretty much
manages to avoid, I would suggest, although people may not like the
result.
Among the five I compare Yablonsky is doing pretty well, so far
at least.
Comparing different interpretations of a piece is pretty interesting
and fun I think. Something I have pondered a little this time is
to which extent conductors tailor their interpretation of a work
to the abilities of the orchestra at hand.
