Don't be so paranoid. Do you really think that Van Eyes, David

of us have been around RMCR for quite a while. Last night I
changed the character I was using to ' (apostrophe).
Which is causing the same extra noise per thread for users of some
other news readers.
If you are using an NNTP feed and a real newsreader, you have the
option to create filters. You can filter out the cross-posts and the
anti-cross post messages quite easily. For the anti-cross posts,
filter against "Subject = "\'" or "\*" or "x" or "X"." If your
newsreader does not support filters, you need a better newsreader.
XNews and Agent are particularly good for text groups. Newsleecher is
excellent for binary groups.
For the RMCR members using Google (a significant percentage of the
group, if you check headers), filters are not currently available.
Many of us use Google because we often use computers in situations
where we do not have access to NNTP feeds. I use Agent at home and
Google when away from home. Sometimes at home I use Google anyway.
I hope this helps. It is not the intention of myself or the others
posting "*"-type threads to annoy or antagonize others. We are just
trying to clean the graffiti off of the walls. Those accessing RMCR
via Google are quite appreciative of what we are doing. Those using
other newsreaders just need to take 30 seconds or so to adjust their
filters to render these actions unobservable.
The real issue is the blizzard of cross-posting crap. It only took a
single miscreant to trigger this, and there is no quick fix to undo
the mess. All we can do is to be patient and to avoid cross-posting
back to the other groups. Of course, the best weapon against the
onslaught is to go about our business. Keeping the Google views
relatively clear is a very important part of that being possible.
Again, sorry for the inconvenience.
I think it's not a good idea to force people who use a newsreader like Outlook
Express to change their newsreader while OE always had fullfilled their needs,
and _because_ others use Google which is not a newsreader.
What you and others are doing might help some readers of the newsgroup, but not
all of them, and it is not a real solution.
It can easily be used in a wrong way too.
