I am looking for a copy of the cartoon version from the 1950s or
earlier of the Rossini William Tell overture as done(in) by Woody
Woodpecker. I recall seeing this once as a kid so my memory is foggy.
It is possible that Woody was not in it at all. Doing a Google search
yielded these pages:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=woody+woodpecker+%2Bwilliam+tell&btnG=Google+Search
and:
http://www.dvdtoons.com/reviews/167
This last page has a link to buy the dvd or vhs tape, but it takes you
to the Coliumbia House home page for videos and I do not find it there
at all. There are numerous WW dvd and VHS collections out there.
Anyone know which one has this on it ? Many collections have only one
WW cartoon and yet use his name as a headliner to sell the item in
question. I could post this query on a cartoon message board, but for
the moment thought this might be quicker as I am not enough of a
cartoon fan or have the time with all my interests to spend that kind
of time.
My memory of the cartoon was that an orchestra is playing but at some
point they get flooded out by a river of water as appropriate for the
music, but they keep trying to play on. Beyond that, I don't recall
much else. Alas, I also don't rememeber what happens in the "Lone
Ranger" section of the overture.
PS: Anyone recomend any Rossini operas and recordings ? In
particular, any of William Tell, his last work ? (By the way, William
Tell was not a real historical figure. That was proven to me beyond
any doubt when I read a number of books on the Jesus as or as not a
historical figure by the authors Robert Price and G(eorge) A. Wells.
They used the example of William Tell as an example of later historcial
developments creating a historical figure where one never existed in
the first place.) Any real difference between his comedies and
dramatic works, musically? What little I have heard sounds like an
extension of Mozart with a few new wrinkles.

The greatest performance of the William Tell Overture I have ever heard
is that performed by Spike Jones and the City Slickers.
Unfortunately when performing same in the legit version I have to try
very hard to stop myself cracking up such is the impression his
recording made.
Kind regards,
