Pletnev may be my favorite living pianist, but I've been pretty
disappointed by his conducting efforts--at least for DG. The only CD on
which he conducts that I really like is his Virgin Tchaikovsky 6 (although
there are many I haven't heard).
In my experience his best conducting has been from the keyboard in Mozart
concertos. Everything else I've heard, especially the DG Tchaikovsky symphonies
(I don't think I've heard the Virgin 6) and Prokofiev Cinderella, has sounded
emasculated to me (though from a technical point of view it's usually been very
impressive).
