The point is to come up with a mechanism which will produce a profit while
satisfying a variety of needs and desires, even if some of them are a bit
obscure (some wo which turn out to be profitable despite this).
Electronic downloading is the only long-term feasible route for low-volume
music like classical, if you expect a wide breadth of titles.
I suggested special import--reply, essentially "been there, done that"
although I can't recall offhand purchasing either Sony or RCA Special
Imports titles, aside from the Sony Portraits tht were brought into the
country about 15 years ago. Even than similar titles were selling in
Canada with "not for sale in the USA" on the label--Sony USA has always
been very protective of its American stomping grounds.
If they are already available in another country, order them from that
country. Problem solved. It is not that expensive. The amount they would
need to add to the price here in the U.S. to cover all the extra paperwork
and admin tasks to handle these low-volume imports would remove any expected
cost savings.
I was also told that the record business is simply too big to account for
the odd 150-250 over-run added to a 1,000 disc press run that might make
such a program possible. So we'll never see those French mono historical
issues talked about with such reverence here unless we are willing to
undergo the trial by earth, air and fire that is international import.
Except for Tower Japan, it's no big deal. And I am not fluent in any
language but English.
Or accept digital download, which in the opinion of many is not nearly
ready for prime time, and might be subject to rootkit inclusion, since
Sony/BMG continues to be paranoid about unauthorized copying, despite the
trouble it got into with just about everybody.
I have never heard of any "rootkits" included in a digital download.
I hope people are asking their libraries to interloan "The Future of
Music" by David Kusek and Gerd Leonhard which talks about the
possibilities, pitfalls and implications of a downloading music business
because it talks about the very issues that are so important to the
corporate side. And draws conclusions Sony/BMG may not totally
appreciate.
Still meaning to pick up that book.
The gripes expressed in this group were honed through the acquisition of
thousands of CDs (each correspondent, myself included) and if
sharp-tounged reflect out collective realization that THERE MUST BE A
BETTER WAY TO DO BUSINESS.
