Very sad.

So she had had cancer since 2000 ? If so, I am surprised the outcome
was not better or she could not get more years left to her. I am also
surprised that if true, that this was not more widely known. The back
problem seemed to me a cover story. Maybe she let this bit of
information out in her interview back in 2000 by mistake, me thinks.
To clarify, the NPR piece was in 2004, and the interviewer/narrator
interjects the information that her cancer was "in remission."
I suspect she did not make public the fact that she had cancer until
it was in remission, and therefore less newsworthy. When she was forced
to cancel her 2006 commitments not too long ago she said it was for
"personal reasons." So she obviously wished to keep her condition
private, except when the immediate danger had susbsided.
I'm no doctor, but I don't think it's so unusual to have cancer for six
years and then succumb. Doctors have gotten good at prolonging the
lives of people with ultimately terminal cancer. I suspect the
"five years = cured" convention is less meaningful now than it
ever was.
