Now we're into - our whackos are better'n your whackos?

Well, Owen, I give you credit for recognizing Ann Coulter as a
"whacko". I just wish EVERYONE did the same - maybe then she couldn't
sell books.

Whacko in the sense of what she's doing, which is to just say things to
get into a liberal's craw. She's doing that better than Michael Moore,
Franken, and even the pseudo whackos like O'Reilley and Buchanan (the
elder statesman whacko by now). She isn't a whacko in the fact that
she knows what will sell, and how she can turn that outrage into
dollars. You and I should be so whacko.

She's gotten a lot more aggressive in recent years because she's found
that it works for her audience. Does this mean that what she writes is
correct? Of course not. The whole talking head cottage industry is
dealing with irrelevent canards ("Bush Lied" "Valerie Plame" "NSA
Spying") which reduces all the issues down to black and white
boilerplate, but that's what they pay them to do.

There's obviously a market for this kind of stuff - it's kind of a
crack cocaine for the political junkie -- "I want to hear somebody
spout the way I want to think." It must trigger some feel-good
mechanism when the junkie finds out there's a bandwagon he can jump on.
So maybe there's some therapeutic value in books like Coulter's and
"Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot" et al.

Not to say that Coulter doesn't write well, on the contrary, she has a
good turn of phrase that I'm sure a lot of other talking heads envy.
Compare her to Maureen Dowd, same screed, same message (The bad guys
suck). Coulter sticks the knife in a little harder. Dowd goes for the
"well, we're all liberals around here, aren't we?" tone which works
well with her audience (those people who read the NYT because it makes
them appear sophisticated). However, nobody bought Dowd's book but
Coulter's are best sellers. Coulter's at least smart enough to target
people with disposable income. Both occasionally get their opposition
outraged, but that only sells more copies.

It helps that Ann is giving hers away for $4.99
