The iPod was designed to work well with a Mac. Why would I want
it to work any other way than the way it was intended to work, and
the way it works best?

I can think of a number of very, very good reasons...

Back in 2003 I bought an iRiver iHP-120 jukebox. When you connect it to a
USB port, it looks like a Toshiba hard drive. You can do anything you
like -- create directories, transfer files, even reformat it. Though
iRiver
provides management software, you don't have to use it.

Back in March, my company gave me an iPod Shuffle as a gift. The only way
to
access it (for music; it can also be used for file storage) is through
iTunes. But iTunes refuses to run "properly" under Windows 2000. When I
connect it, iTunes briefly recognizes the Shuffle as drive P, then
disconnects. ONLY TWICE has it established a stable relationship that
allowed me to transfer files.

I've complained about this to HP (it's the HP edition), and have been told
my computer is "over-configured" -- I have "too many" drives. From my
perspective, this only shows how badly the software is designed.

No, I think it shows the stupidity of the person you spoke with. I'm glad
you're going to complain again.

Check this out too:

These problems never occur with the iRiver, because I'm free to set up
directories and transfer files in any way I see fit. Of course, iRiver
doesn't have a Web site with hundreds of thousands of downloads it wants
me
to purchase, and thus a motivation to force me to use software that's
constantly reminding me about the existence of that site.

I'm going to complain again. And this time I'll insist it be escalated.
There's no excuse for crappy software like this -- especially from Apple,
who's always bragging about how well-designed theirs is.

You do know Windows 2000 went out of mainstream support last June. It's now
on Extended support and they'll only release Security patches. I would
recommend upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 2.
