maybe the things that are driving down his poll numbers are not those

That's the straw that broke the camel's back.

Finally, his utter incompetence was there in New Orleans, visible on
television, with thousands of American citizens swimming for their very

lives, while he and "doing a heck of a job" Brown were still thinking
that they had dodged the bullet.

What they didn't know was that the bullet wasn't the hurricane, it was
public opinion.

And they didn't dodge it.

I think that's exactly right. People in the US are just damned weary
of the constant bickering and yammering from all sides, and the 70%
whose political persuasions lie closer to the middle than the ends have
just been willing to give this guy every chance in the world to redeem
himself, despite his many human (some would say sub-human) flaws -
until they saw his thoroughly idiotic performance in New Orleans. Now
I am not saying that I think the primary fault for the Katrina response
disaster lies with the Feds or the Bush Administration in particular (I
think the City itself never properly picked up the ball as the obvious
first response agency), but in a disaster of that calibre, the nation
looks to the Feds for guidance - and the President showed his ability
to lead for what it really is. And the people have finally said,
"Enough slippery BS, George, time to take responsibility for your
actions"...and it's been downhill ever since. What was a constant
source of irritation to the Democrats has now become a major point of
embarrassment to the Repuglicans.
