Re: Back in the days of Schock and Rothenberger

Matthew asks about:

"Rudolf Schock and Anneliese Rothenberger? "

I love 'em both, although Schock's voice was never ravishingly
beautiful and the upper register became problematic and odd fairly
early on. He has so much gusto and personality and he's so basically
musical that I love almost everything I've ever heard. One great
favorite is the Wiener Blut excerpts with Gueden and Robert Stolz.

My favorite Rothenberger recording may well be her recording of Berg's
second operetta, Lulu. It was recorded before Cerha's completion, but
Rothenberger comes closer than anybody I've ever heard to the ideal
combination of voice and style for this music. (Not that I don't like
Stratas and Silja. I'd even be curious to hear Ilona Steingruber.)
