In article <495abqFm8b39U1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, Paul Ilechko says...
.. and we usually are, somewhere in this NG - I need a recommendation
for a Mahler 9.
One of my absolute favorite Mahler recordings is the first movement of
the 9th by Boulez and the CSO, but unfortunately the rest of the
symphony is a letdown after that. I'm looking for a version that begins
with that same level of intensity, but managed to sustain it for the
duration.
Any suggestions ?
In keeping with the fine rmcr tradition of mentioning performances that may be
out of print or findable in used CD shops only, look for Maderna's on Arkadia
(mono, but it probably won't matter; overall this is probably the most intense
performance I know; I'm referring to the performance available on a separate
disc, not the performance in the box with a couple of other Mahler symphonies;
haven't heard that one - assuming it's different) and Sanderling's on a BBC
Magazine disc (with one of the regional BBC orchestras). I don't have any
specific memories of what Sinopoli does in the first movement, but he's
marvelous in iii, especially the coda. For a remarkably intense finale, Karajan
II (it's even readily available). For a really funny start to ii, Gielen's first
recording. You might also like Ancerl/Supraphon.
