I'm not exactly sure why, but I suspect I have a small selection only
(the usual suspects - PC3, R&J, Sym 1 etc) because I just haven't
responded to much of his music at an emotional level. I also haven't
heard at lot of it in the concert hall either (unlike Shostakovich
which is programmed much more frequently).

I'm happy to be proved wrong; hence my willingness to try again.
Maybe starting with the symphonies isn't the best way to go.

If people here think there are hidden masterpieces of Prokofiev, I'm
very interested in listening to them.

Jack

Thank you Jack...

A particular favorite of mine is the score for his ballet CINDERELLA... I am
aware that most folks prefer his Romeo and Juliet... but I find his C is
just magical... I think he hit the right "tone" for this one... there is
humor (in the Dancing lesson)... and romance in the Pas de deux... the
orchestration sparkles appropriately. I don't know where I read the quote,
but I believe Prokofiev considered his score for this ballet "silvery"...
and I think this is correct...

I love the Romeo and Juliet, but CINDERELLA is my particular favorite. I
have 2 recordings of the complete ballet... the Ashkenazy/Cleveland
Orchestra and the Pletnev/Russian National Orchestra... I personally prefer
the Ashkenazy recording... better "story-telling"...!
