One of my absolute favorite Mahler recordings is the first movement of the 9th by Boulez and the CSO, but unfortunately the rest of the symphony is a letdown after that. I'm looking for a version that begins with that same level of intensity, but managed to sustain it for the duration.
Bernstein/NYP or Bernstein/Concertgebouw; Giulini; Haitink/Concertgebouw;

I have Haitink, and while it's beautifully structured and balanced it's more buttoned-down than I'm looking for. I want it to really *scream* ...
I've been thinking about Bernstein/NYP as I like their 7th ...
I finally heard the Haitink as part of the complete set. I didn't like it at all. The strings sound lovely, but I heard some persistent intonation problems in the WWs and the brass simply sounded weak througout. I could tolerate all of this if there were something profound about the interpretation, but nothing in Haitink's conducting made up for it.
