Because of the particular use of the open strings, it would be somewhat
more awkward on the violin. The viola shares the same tuning, just an
octave higher, so that one plays that octave higher easily, whereas the
C string register material would need octave redistribution on the
violin.

Anyhow, I guess there's enough Bach for violin that they don't feel the
need, whereas violists play these and the Gamba Sonatas quite often.
