I just have the one solo piano disc of Bartok, played by Peter Frankl.
What disc(s) should I buy next to get a really good account of all
these works?
I have the complete set by Sandor which I think is very good, but people say that Kocsis has surpassed him. It wouldn't surprise me, as K's Debussy is superb. I'm not necessarily recommending that you get a complete set though, as to be honest Mikrokosmos and For Children do drag a bit. I generally play the other discs ...
Also, where to go next - e.g. Janacek piano music, Kodaly piano music
or what? Looking for 20th century E.European piano music in this folksy
idiom.
The Janacek piano music is excellent, I have a 2CD set with Firkusny on DG that was very cheap when I got it - I think from Berkshire.
Not E. European, but look into Villa Lobos's piano music if you haven't already. It's has some similarities with Bartok. I have the Hamelin set with the two A Prole do Bebe Suites, and Rudepoema.
