I must agree with your conclusions, which apply to more areas of
cultural life than music. I think the large majority of our
contemporaries "like", for instance, Burma Shave signs (for those of us
in advancing years) in preference to say, T S Eliot. Or prefer Norman
Rockwell to the impressionist painters. The same comparison could be
made with fiction, movies, or .........
Maybe, but I've also noted that there seem to be loads more people who
are generally familiar with the visual high arts, and especially the
contemporary stuff, than with the musical high arts. Which is
interesting, I think, since I don't really understand it (there's
probably a very simple explanation - maybe it's just because you can go
to a museum and pay some level of attention to the work of several
dozen artists during a visit of an hour or two, and how much time you
spend with each work is entirely up to you, but, OTOH, you might only
hear the work of one or two composers in the same amount of time and
there's no option about how long it takes - music requires a pretty
inflexible time commitment (except for some experimental things)).
wr
Sure. And in the museum you can walk around, dress comfortably, talk to your
friends, stay as long as you like, and pay far less for the experience than
for the 2-3 hours you'd spend at a classical concert or opera.
