Closer to the root would be an examination of how it is that people can "believe" in things they've never actually experienced themselves, stuff that basically is word of mouth, from original sources extremely far removed from the individual, and which defy anything like "regular" reality (which is obviously part of the charm, of course).
And which, for the most part, would be considered a paranoid belief if it weren't supported by a HUGE hierarchy, which was created hundreds or even thousands of years ago when people knew exponentially less and had some reason to be superstitious.
