One of the first LPs in my family's collection was the Remington disk
of Kurt Woess and the Austrain Symphony playing the Tchaikovsky 5th
symphony. The side turnover occurred in the middle of the second
movement. What I didn't know was that the finale had the notorious
"Mengelberg cut." Later, I acquired a Tchaik 5th of my own and was
absolutely astounded when I heard all that new music in the finale. I
had the same experience after starting off with the Toscanini "Manfred"
symphony, and then going on to one without finale cuts (circa 1955),
conducted, IIRC, by Kletzki. I began to think that Tchaikovsky was a
composer full of surprises.
I never got another Remington LP, so my memories of the label aren't so
bad.
