I want to express my thanks to Allan Evans for drawing attention to
this wonderful
DVD of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances with the Czech Philharmonic conducted
by Vaclav Talich in 1955, a Czech Television production when Talich was
72. This was apparently his last appearance with the orchestra and the
performances, full of vitality and panache, belie the conductor's age
and health, which must not have been that good at the time, judging by
his restricted motion (he had been known to have been a much more
expressive conductor in his earlier years).
The DVD contains a fascinating documentary by Martin Suchanek
("Confidence and Humility") on Talich's life and a rare photo gallery
with interesting photos (one with Rafael Kubelik during the war and a
very poignant photo of Sviatoslav Richter at Talich's grave were the
highlights for me).
Recommended in the strongest terms.
