For DVD's I would go out of my way for TY's, but for CD's I'd loom for a
cheap 25 or 50 pack at your local retailer. I usually buy Maxell.

Ripping should be maximum speed. Burning should be at maximum speed if where
you will be playing it can handle it. I used to see some older car CD
players have some problems and I would burn at 4x or 8x, but these days you
should be able to get away with maximum speed.

I think MP3's in variable bitrate are a great compromise - great sound
without the larger files of the lossless formats (like FLAC). The LAME MP3
encoder has a command line option "-alt preset standard" to set up
everything up for a nice VBR rip. "EAC" Exact Audio Copy is a nice free
ripper.
IF you are only ripping temporarily, to compile new CD's, than keep them in
WAV format so they are identical to the original.
