Converging threads

A while back, somebody gave me a recommendation for a good "starter" SACD
player, the Toshiba SD-6915. It also plays POCDs (Plain Old Compact
Discs), DVDs, CDRs full of MP3s, etc. I kept a search going on eBay for a
while and finally got a used one in near-new condition for under $50. I've
only got my system set up for two channels right now (though my Sony STR-
CD435 will do 5.1, and I even still have all four speakers I used for my
quadraphonic setup back in the 1970s!), but it plays the hybrids I already
had just fine, and regular CDs and CDRs.
It also plays things my Apex AD-600A wouldn't, such as DVD-Rs, "Fantasia
Legacy," and BMG's Caruso documentary. I found the secret handshake for
making it region-free, and now it plays "The Fall and Rise of Reginald
Perrin" too. Haven't checked it out with imported opera DVDs yet, though.
And while some people hate the remote, and dislike the skip-disc function
because it isn't instantaneous or something, I don't mind too much. I may
give the Apex to my dad. That's one thread.
Next, there's the Chandos SACD (actually a hybrid issue) of the Corigliano
Symphony #2, with Yuli Turovsky and I Musici di Montréal. I already had
John Storgårds/Helsinki PO in this work on Ondine, and had been dying to
listen to it, but I held out until I could have both recordings to compare
side-by-side. Irritatingly, the Chandos is priced sky-high, and by the
time I realized that nobody had it at a decent price and went to Borders
Westwood with a 25% off coupon, the one and only copy they had was gone
(though their online inventory still claims they have it!).
Anyway, yesterday I had occasion to drive all the way down to Long Beach,
and I realized it was just a short ways from the Borders there, so I took a
chance. $24.99 minus 20% from the coupon brought it a penny below the $20
which is my reluctance limit, so now I have it. At first hearing I think I
like Storgårds a little better, more relaxed and spacious, but the Chandos
recording is better even "only" in 2-channels. Haven't heard the filler
items yet, though, just the symphony. And that's another thread.
Now get this -- the Trio of the Scherzo (2nd movement) contains a passage
which turns out to be, are you ready? Yes! That pungent string orchestra
passage used by KUSC in some promos for their "Modern Masterpieces" show!
So now that question has been solved (and I get to write back to KUSC with
great lip-smacking pleasure and tell THEM what it is!), and three threads
important to me in this newsgroup have now converged. Yee-haw!
