I've acquired several old LPs of harpsichordist Ruggero Gerlin.
Gerlin, Italian born, was one of Landowska's early students in the
pre-WWII years in France. He had a particular affinity for the baroque
French repertoire, and for the L'Oiseau Lyre division of London records
recorded, among other things, the complete Francois Couperin, Louis
Couperin and Rameau.
I've known of Gerlin for many years, but actually listening to these
has been a real discovery. Gerlin mesmerizes with his elegant and
colorful playing - his execution of ornaments is nothing short of
spectacular IMO - I was particularly taken with his recording of Pieces
de Clavecin en Concert with Rampal.
One quality I've noticed in the best students of Landowska, (Puyana,
Gerlin, Wolfe) is their highly developed rhythmic sense - abolutely
enviable.
One could only hope against hope that Gerlin's large recorded output
will one day become available on CD. As for myself, I am intent on
finding every one of his LPs!!
